What size sufuria do I need
Pick the sufuria that matches the people at the pot, not the largest one on the stall. A 28 cm aluminium sufuria is the usual Kenyan family pot. A 32 cm pot covers guests. A 50 cm pot is hotel work.
Size is how Kenyans buy cookware. You do not search for a generic cooking pot. You search for 30 cm, 7 litres, or a pot that will do ugali for eight. This guide turns those searches into a clear choice, then sends you to the piece on the floor at Kamukunji Utensils.
How Kenyan shops number a sufuria
Two numbers matter. Diameter is the width across the rim, in centimetres. Capacity is how much the pot holds, in litres. Traders also use older size numbers such as 20, 22 or 24. Those are factory stamps, not litres. Always ask for cm and litres together. A tall 28 cm pot holds more than a shallow 28 cm pot.
The table below is typical for a standard aluminium sufuria sold in Kamukunji. Actual litres change with height and belly. Confirm the piece on WhatsApp before you pay.
| Diameter | Typical litres | People | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 cm | 6 to 8 L | 3 to 4 | Rice, vegetables, a small stew |
| 28 cm | 10 to 14 L | 5 to 8 | Everyday ugali and stew |
| 32 cm | 16 to 20 L | 8 to 12 | Guests, Sunday lunch |
| 36 cm | 24 to 30 L | 12 to 20 | Chama, small event |
| 40 cm | 35 to 45 L | 20 to 35 | Catering start |
| 50 cm | 60 to 80 L | 40 to 70 | Hotel or school pot |
| 60 cm | 90 to 120 L | 80 to 120 | Institutional cooking |
The full reference, including 20 cm sauce pots, lives on the utensil size guide.
A household of four
If you cook for four most nights, start with a 24 cm / 8 L aluminium sufuria and a 28 cm / 12 L aluminium sufuria. The smaller pot does rice and vegetables. The 28 cm pot does ugali and the main stew. Add a 28 cm non-stick frying pan for eggs and chapati nights.
A single 32 cm pot will feed four, but it is heavier to wash and uses more water and fuel for a small meal. Save the 32 cm for weekends.
A household of eight, or guests every Sunday
This is the most common Kamukunji question. Buy the 32 cm / 18 L sufuria as the main pot. Keep the 28 cm as the second pot so rice and stew can cook at the same time. If you are setting up a new house, the 5-piece aluminium set is usually cheaper than five open-stock pots and gives you the size ladder in one WhatsApp.
Chama, church lunch, small event
Once you pass twelve people, a home 32 cm pot starts to fail you. Move to the 36 cm / 28 L or the 40 cm / 40 L. Those sizes still sit on a strong home burner if the ring is wide enough. Test the pot on your stove before you cook for twenty. A narrow coil will not heat a 40 cm base evenly.
Hotels and schools
Do not stretch a family pot. A 50 cm pot and a 60 cm degchi are different tools. Read cooking pot sizes for 50, 100 and 200 people and start on the commercial cooking pots page.
Pressure cookers are sized in litres only
A pressure cooker is sold as 5 L, 7 L or 10 L, not as 28 cm. The 7 litre pressure cooker is the family size in Kenya. Use it for beans and tough meat. It does not replace the sufuria for ugali.
A short decision list

| 5 to 8 people | 28 cm, then add 32 cm |
| A new home | The 5-piece set |
| Guests and chama | 32 cm and 36 cm |
| A hotel line | 50 cm and 60 cm |
